Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
Uppsala University hereby declares one position in the philosophy program or the aesthetics program of the Department of Philosophy open for applications.
The Department of Philosophy is internationally renowned, with research strengths in ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of language, history of philosophy, philosophy of law, philosophical anthropology, philosophy of science and aesthetics. Uppsala University retains a national commission from the Swedish government to provide education and research in aesthetics. For this reason, the Department offers two distinct doctoral programs, i.e. one in practical and theoretical philosophy, and another in aesthetics. The aesthetics program is fully integrated in the Department of Philosophy.
Information about the different areas of research in the department is available here: http://www.filosofi.uu.se/research/research-seminars/
The successful candidates will be employed by the department as PhD candidates (“doktorandanställning”) for 4 years full-time, and as employees they will be eligible for Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The starting salary is currently 25 600 SEK/month. Doctoral students are expected to engage in their studies full-time, and to participate in the activities of the department. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments, amounting to no more than 20% of full-time employment. The position is available from 15 January 2018.
Please note that admission for the PhD at Uppsala University is highly competitive and that a Master Degree in the Humanities or Sciences or equivalent at the time of application is a prerequisite for a successful application.
Your application should include (a) a statement declaring whether you are applying to the doctoral program in philosophy or aesthetics; (b) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date; (c) a statement outlining your proposed research (4-5 pages); (d) a copy of your MA thesis (and/or examined theses at other academic levels); (e) copies of diplomas or equivalent documentation of eligibility and academic qualifications; and (f) publications and other relevant documents the applicant wishes to bring to our attention (e.g. writing sample, list of references, reference letters).
