Andrew Reisner, Uppsala universitet: "The contribution of photographic technology and technique to the aesthetic value of photographs"
An influential tradition in both art criticism and philosophy holds that photographs are either not works of art or are artistically lesser than manual art forms such as painting and drawing. In this paper I argue that these criticisms rely on the assumption that two-dimensional pictorial art forms share a common set of aesthetic standards and that those are essentially the standards associated with painting and drawing. Through a look at some features of photographic technique and technology, I outline some ways in which an alternative set of aesthetic standards might be developed that avoids both the mind-independence objection and Rob Hopkins’s criticism of what he calls ‘authentic photography’.
