Sören Stenlund was appointed professor of theoretical philosophy in 2000. He was Head of the Philosophy Department in Uppsala and a member of the Faculty Board for the humanities in the period 2001-2003. He has been Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy since 2003 and the coordinator of the seminar for theoretical philosophy since 2001. As a member of the Faculty Board, Stenlund was appointed member of a coordinating group the task of which was to draw up a program for renewal of the research within the faculty. This resulting program “Kulturanalys och samtidskritik”, was based on Stenlund’s ideas. The article Philosophy and Critique of Culture is one of Stenlund’s contributions to the research program. This article was completed while Stenlund was a resident fellow of SCAS in the fall of 2003. Since his dissertation in 1972, Stenlund has published books and articles on various themes in the philosophies of language, logic and mathematics. Problems concerning the nature and history of philosophy are other themes dealt with in Stenlund’s publications, some of which are available only in Swedish. He is currently working on Wittgenstein’s philosophy of mathematics. Preliminary results have been presented at international conferences in Uppsala and Skjolden, Norway, and in the form of an invited lecture at the Department of Philosophy, University of Chicago.
