Philosophy of Law
Uppsala is one of the rare departments of philosophy to have a section of practical philosophy specializing in philosophy of law. The Higher Seminar in Philosophy of Law was launched in 2015 following an investment of the Vice Chancellor in this area of research. In the early 20th century Uppsala University and the Department of Philosophy were the center of the so-called "Uppsala School", which came to exercise a remarkable influence through Scandinavian legal realism, and included, besides Axel Hägerström and Adoph Phalén, leading legal scholars such as Alf Ross, Vilhelm Lundstedt and Karl Olivecrona. Today Patricia Mindus represents the discipline as president of the Swedish section of the IVR. In the Higher Seminar texts are presented on different issues in philosophy of law. National and international guests are regularly invited. PhD students in philosophy of law present their dissertation plans. So-called final seminars prior to viva within philosophy of law also take place within the framework of the seminar. PhD students in philosophy of law also present research in progress here. Topics vary, the focus being determined by the interests of the seminar participants.
Seminar Chair: Patricia Mindus. Seminars on Thursdays 16-18 or on invitation. Please contact the seminar chair person to be added to the seminar mailing list and receive seminar material. For seminar programme, please visit the Calendar.
