Theoretical Philosophy
Matti Eklund is in charge of the Higher Seminar in Theoretical Philosophy. (The seminar Philosophy of Language and Culture, led by Sharon Rider, is a separate research seminar within Theoretical Philosophy, and the Higher Seminar in History of Philosophy, led by Pauliina Remes, is likewise a separate seminar.) Topics vary, but presentations are often in core areas of the subject, such as metaphysics, philosophy of language, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of logic and mathematics. Exact focus each semester can be determined by the interests of the current participants, as well as ongoing research projects. Research projects that to some extent have had an effect on the activities within the seminar are The Lightness of Being and The Varieties of Normativity.
PhD students in Theoretical Philosophy present their dissertation plans under the auspices of this Higher Seminar. "Final seminars" (the last presentation of research before the dissertation defense) within Theoretical Philosophy also take place under the auspices of this seminar. Some of the PhD students in Theoretical Philosophy regularly present their research in progress here.
